Today, Disney announced that they would be retiring FastPass, FastPass+, and MaxPass and replacing it with TWO brand new options — Disney Genie+ and Individual Attraction Selections.
But, for guests who have ever traveled to Disneyland and utilized the MaxPass service, the new Disney Genie+ offering might look pretty similar. So, that’s why we’re breaking down the differences and what to expect when the new feature launches in both Disney World and Disneyland this fall!
Here’s How Disney Genie+ Does (and Doesn’t) Compare to MaxPass!
What is Included
Disneyland’s MaxPass was introduced back in 2017 as a way for guests to “max” their park experience by combining two different services — Disney PhotoPass and Disney Fastpass. And, Disney Genie+ will include similar benefits when it becomes available this fall.
Much like MaxPass, guests who purchase Disney Genie+ at Disneyland will receive unlimited PhotoPass downloads and be able to access new Lightning Lanes (which are the new FastPass lanes) at more than 15 attractions in both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.
At Disney World, Disney Genie+ will include Disney PhotoPass AR Lenses and access to the Lightning Lanes at more than 40 attractions throughout all four theme parks.
And, similar to the experience with MaxPass, guests will only be able to choose one attraction’s Lightning Lane at a time. Though, it is still unclear whether Lightning Lane return times will be spaced one hour apart like they were for MaxPass.
Cost
When it comes to the cost of Disney Genie+, it will remain the same for Disneyland guests at $20 per guest, per day, and will be a bit cheaper at Disney World at $15 per guest, per day.
Plus, guests will still be able to add on the option prior to their vacation or choose to wait to purchase until they arrive the day of. While you can purchase in advance, you will need to wait until the day of in order to make selections for your attractions, unlike FastPass that allowed you to make these beforehand.
But, the biggest difference between MaxPass and Disney Genie+ when it comes to cost is that there will not be a complimentary FastPass or Lightning Lane option. Instead, the only way for guests to “skip the line” at attractions in both Disneyland and Disney World is to purchase Disney Genie+ or opt for an Individual Attraction Selection.

When and Where You Can Book Lightning Lanes
So, what about where and when you can begin booking Lightning Lanes using Disney Genie+? Well, just like MaxPass, those headed to Disneyland will need to be inside the park before they can make their first Lightning Lane selection. At Disney World, hotel guests will be able to purchase Individual Attraction Selections at 7AM from outside the parks. For all other guests, they will need to make selections at the time of park opening.
And, two of the big perks of MaxPass will remain, as guests will be able to book Lightning Lane selections for rides in any park (as long as they’ve purchased a park hopper ticket) and everything can be booked digitally through the My Disney Experience or Disneyland app!
