If you are planning a trip to Disney World during the summer, you will not be able to avoid storms, rain, and overall bad weather.

It is just a part of visiting Florida in the summer. However, you also need to pay attention to hurricanes. While summer storms can be inconvenient, hurricanes are another beast entirely. So let’s get into everything you can expect from hurricane season at Disney World.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th, so if your Disney World trip is happening sometime in the next six months, you’ll need this information. Let’s start with how hurricane season is supposed to look this year.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), they are predicting a below-average hurricane season. This organization is forecasting 3-6 hurricanes, with 1-3 of those reaching a major hurricane status (Category 3, 4, or 5).

These numbers are based on advanced forecast modeling and hurricane tracking technologies. However, this is not a guarantee, and there is still always a chance that a hurricane could impact your Disney World vacation if you travel during hurricane season. So let’s dive into how Disney handles hurricanes and what you can expect if a hurricane does hit while you’re visiting Disney.

Rainy day

If a hurricane warning is issued in your home county or at Disney World within seven days of your arrival, you will be able to reschedule or cancel any accommodations booked directly through Disney for free. Therefore, if you booked anything from flights, hotels, transportation, etc., through a third-party organization, you will have to reach out to them directly to find out their hurricane policies.

Another important note is that if you booked your current reservation under a deal or a promotion, it is not a guarantee that Disney will be able to provide that same deal on your new reservation. The same applies to your resort; they cannot guarantee that your original resort will have availability on your new travel days.

The best course of action if you have any cancellation questions is to speak directly to a Cast Member who will always do their best to accommodate you. You can read a more in-depth review of Disney’s hurricane cancellation policy here.

Now, let’s get into everything that happens if a hurricane happens to hit while you’re already at Disney World. While it is rare, it is possible for Disney to fully close down their parks for either part of the day or multiple days, depending on the conditions of the storm.

However, given that Orlando is very inland, hurricanes typically do not escalate to this level, and Disney can stay open. However, all outdoor attractions will likely close during the storm.

If the parks do close and you are staying on property, Disney does everything in their power to make it a safe and enjoyable experience. This includes hurricane meal kits, indoor activities, and even fun character appearances at the resorts.

As we said before, hurricanes do not typically affect Disney World this strongly, and it seems as though this year the hurricanes will be slightly below average. However, this is not a guarantee, and it is always best to be prepared and know what to do if a hurricane impacts your trip.
