Roller coasters are supposed to be fun, but this one looks like it’s out to terrify you.

Kings Dominion welcomed a brand-new coaster this year, and it’s not just any roller coaster. Rapterra, which opened on March 29th, 2025, is the world’s tallest and longest launched wing coaster, and it has quickly gained a reputation for being one of the most intense rides in the country. With a dramatic backstory, jaw-dropping stats, and some seriously wild maneuvers, it’s a ride we know thrill seekers will obsess over. Let’s dive into why Rapterra might just become the ride that either makes or breaks your coaster courage.
The Legend Behind Rapterra
Before we even talk about the ride itself, Kings Dominion went all in with an immersive backstory. Rapterra is themed to the legendary Jungle Hawk, a mythical bird of prey that ancient leaders once honored with a shrine. According to the lore, anyone who entered the shrine was spiritually linked to the Jungle Hawk and given its fierce powers. Unfortunately, the shrine was built at the base of a volcano, Mt. Inferna, and was buried under rock when the ground collapsed. Centuries later, archaeologists rediscovered the temple ruins, but the Jungle Hawk’s spirit never left.

This is where you come in. When you board Rapterra, you’re essentially stepping into the role of someone brave enough to embrace the spirit of the Jungle Hawk. The ride itself is designed to simulate the bird’s powerful and unpredictable flight. That’s a pretty epic setup for what’s already an intimidating roller coaster.
The Launch
Most roller coasters begin with a long chain lift hill, giving you plenty of time to anticipate what’s coming. Rapterra doesn’t give you that luxury. Instead, it uses electromagnetic propulsion to launch riders out of the station, hitting 65 miles per hour in just four seconds. That initial blast is meant to mimic the Jungle Hawk swooping in on its prey. One moment you’re waiting calmly in the station, and the next, you’re hurtling skyward with no time to second-guess your life choices.

That alone would be enough to leave most riders breathless, but it’s just the beginning. The launch sends you soaring 145 feet into the air before you dive straight back down, and that’s where the real chaos begins.
The Rapterra Experience
Once you’re in the air, Rapterra wastes no time throwing everything it has at you. The ride hits three major inversions: a dive loop, a corkscrew, and a 360-degree raptor roll. You’re constantly flipping, twisting, and swooping, which really drives home the feeling that you’re soaring like the Jungle Hawk itself.

The train’s wing coaster design means riders are seated on either side of the track with nothing above or below them. That “dangling out in the open” sensation takes every flip and drop to another level of intensity. As you crest hills, dive toward the ground, and whip through turns, there’s nothing but air between you and the midway below. Even for coaster veterans, that’s enough to make your stomach flip.

At one point, you even get a moment of weightlessness before diving right back into another inversion. With all of these elements packed into an 89-second ride, there’s hardly a second to catch your breath.
Ride Stats
If you’re a numbers person, here’s what makes Rapterra stand out:
- Coaster Type: Launched Wing
- Height: 145 feet
- Launch Speed: 65 miles per hour
- Inversions: 3 (dive loop, corkscrew, 360° raptor roll)
- Length: 3,086 feet
- Duration: 89 seconds
- Designer: Bolliger & Mabillard
- Trains: 2, with 20 riders per train

On paper, the stats already make Rapterra an impressive ride. But combined with the immersive story and its winged design, it feels like something you have to see (and ride) to believe.
Rider Safety
Of course, with a ride this intense, there are some important restrictions to keep in mind. Guests need to be between 48″ and 78″ tall to ride, and each seat includes an over-the-shoulder harness with a safety belt. Because of the restraint system, guests of larger size may not be accommodated, and a test seat is available at the ride’s entrance.

Guests with certain medical conditions, prosthetics, or injuries will want to review the full list of requirements before boarding. This ride isn’t just thrilling— it’s physically demanding, and safety rules are in place to make sure everyone has a secure experience.
Why Rapterra Stands Out
Kings Dominion has had its fair share of thrill rides, but Rapterra feels like a statement piece. It’s not only record-breaking in its category, but it also delivers a level of theming that ties the whole experience together. You’re not just riding a roller coaster — you’re taking on the spirit of the Jungle Hawk, with all the dives, spins, and swoops that come with it.

For coaster enthusiasts, it’s a must-ride. For the casual theme park guest, it might be one of those rides you stand back and watch, trying to decide if you’re brave enough to climb aboard. Either way, it’s the kind of addition that makes Kings Dominion a destination worth considering.
