Epic Universe has a Potter problem.

Ever since Universal’s Epic Universe opened to the public in May, the new theme park has pulled in large crowds and long wait times for its lineup of attractions, including Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, Mine-Cart Madness, and Hiccup’s Wing Gliders. However, the park’s most-popular ride BY FAR has been Harry Potter and the Battle of the Ministry. Perhaps, it could be argued it’s *too* popular.
Located in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Ministry of Magic section of the park, the latest in Universal’s family of Potter attractions is described by the company as an adventure where guests “travel by Métro-Floo from Paris to the British Ministry of Magic where Dolores Umbridge is about to stand trial. Board a lift and join Harry, Ron, and Hermione as you journey deep into the Ministry’s many departments. Thrilling adventure, fantastic beasts, and unexplored mystery await in Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry.”

The ride has been drawing long (and I mean LONG) lines since the park was in its preview period, and has been averaging waits WELL over 100 minutes since the park opened to the general public on May 22nd, 2025. While massively inflated wait times are common for highly anticipated new attractions — I’ve waited on my fair share of long lines for new rides over my years of theme park attendance — there’s reason to believe that these wait times won’t be falling for a long time.

First off, there’s the Potter of it all. All three of Universal’s other Harry Potter E-Ticket attractions have opened to massive waits. Now, while Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Islands of Adventure and Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts have both settled down somewhat, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure has not.

Despite having been open for over 6 years now, the coaster at Islands of Adventure still usually averages waits well over an hour, often nearing or exceeding 100 minutes, despite offering a single rider line option and being eligible for Universal’s Express Pass.
Hagrid’s, which replaced the Dragon Challenge coaster (itself a retheme of the opening day Islands of Adventure Dueling Dragons), has arguably maintained this popularity thanks to a combination of factors. It’s a thrilling roller coaster, with a somewhat unique ride system that’s not too wild to be enjoyed by younger riders, and is heavily themed with environments and animatronics that would feel more at home on a dark ride.

While Battle at the Ministry isn’t a coaster like Hagrid’s, it does feature a thrilling and unique ride system that is accessible to all audiences, as well as some of the most in-depth Potter theming seen in any of the Wizarding World installations. That may give the ride the same type of ride time staying power as the Motorbike Adventure.
There’s another fact that indicates Battle at the Ministry will maintain long wait times for the foreseeable future, and it has to due with the rest of Epic Universe. While Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry would likely be a massively popular E-Ticket at any park in the world, it stands so far above the pack at Epic Universe because the park’s ride count is relatively low at 11 attractions.

On top of that, 8 of the park’s attractions — Constellation Carousel, Curse of the Werewolf, Dragon Racer’s Rally, Fyre Drill, Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, Mine-Cart Madness, Stardust Racers, and Yoshi’s Adventure — are all at least partially outdoors, and vulnerable to weather delays. Meaning that on days when it rains — a common occurrence in Central Florida as anyone who has ever been there can attest — Battle at the Ministry, along with Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experience and Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, have to “pick up the slack,” as it were. In other words, until Universal adds more indoor attractions to Epic Universe, these three rides are going to be swamped when it rains.

In fact, adding more attractions might be the only way that Battle at the Ministry’s wait times see a significant downturn. Currently, there are countless rumors as to what an Epic Universe expansion could look like, with everything from Creature from the Black Lagoon and Zelda expansions or Dark Universe and Super Nintendo World, respectively, to a new portal based on Universal properties like Back to the Future being pontificated on.

However, in truth, there is little confirmed about a possible expansion at this time. In July 2025, Universal officially filed paperwork with Orange County for a “vertical construction” project that will be located between the entrance and Super Nintendo World, and is classified as a shop, warehouse, or restaurant. While this 40,000 square foot project has no timeline and is likely too small to be any close to a major ride addition, the fact that Universal is moving to expand the park so quickly gives us hope that larger-scale additions may not be far behind.

Epic Universe Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry has a long wait time problem, and it’s likely not being fixed anytime soon. Stay tuned to AllEars for more on Universal’s newest park.
