We’ve all felt the frustration when booking travel and buying tickets for events and the like.

When you go to buy the tickets or book a hotel, you get one price. However, when you get ready to check out, you might see additional fees, or even worse, you find out about additional fees when you arrive at the hotel you’ve booked. Well, that will soon be a thing of the past — at least in the U.S.
According to the Associated Press, The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently announced that it would soon require event promoters, hotels, vacation rental platforms, and more to disclose hidden “junk” fees up front. That means when you buy tickets or reserve hotel rooms, the full REAL price will be revealed as soon as you look it up.

The FTC commented that we often seen prices advertised for hotel rooms, short-term rentals, and tickets to concerts and sporting events only to find out later that there are additional fees like resort fees, processing fees, and other charges. This new requirement means that those fees will be added to the price you see for those things right off the bat.

FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a statement: “People deserve to know up front what they’re being asked to pay without worrying that they’ll later be saddled with mysterious fees that they haven’t budgeted for and can’t avoid.”
So how does this affect you? Well, if you’re booking a trip, your hotel must let you know if there are resort fees or cleaning fees up front. This also goes for if you book something like an AirBnB. For tickets, all costs associated with that ticket will be shown up front. So the prices of hotels and tickets might seem to go up, but in truth, it’s the same price you would’ve paid all along with the additional fees added. Basically, you’ll have no more surprises when it comes to the cost of these things.

Previously, the Biden administration issued rules to require airlines to better disclose fees for baggage and cancellations, as well as automatically issue cash refunds for delayed flights.

Nice junk fees are disclosed. However, time to limit those junk fees. $40 airline charge for a piece of luggage? $50 nightly resort fees?
