James Cameron Just Gave Us an Update on the Future of ‘Avatar’ — But It Isn’t What You Might Think

Who else is ready for the next Avatar movie to come out? 🙋🏼‍♀️

We know we are! We are impatiently waiting for updates about Avatar 3 — and honestly, we have been since Avatar 2 was released. We love the immersive world that this film franchise brings and the stories being told. Plus, new movies also mean possible new updates to Pandora: The World of Avatar at Animal Kingdom at Disney World (Disney, if you’re reading this… please give us MORE). While we haven’t gotten many new updates on Avatar 3 just yet, James Cameron did give us some information about Avatar 6 and 7!

While we only have had 2 movie releases in the Avatar franchise, that doesn’t mean there aren’t bigger and better plans for the future. The director of Avatar, James Cameron, sat down with People and gave an exclusive interview about the future of Avatar — and we have to talk about it.

So far, they have entire movies written up until Avatar 5, which is said to be released in 2031. Even with plans so far in the future, the creative teams for Avatar already have concepts and ideas for Avatar 6 and 7.

Where did all of this inspiration for these movies come from? Well, Cameron noted that he took inspiration from the Star Trek and Star Wars universe. The idea that communities were built around these franchises is important to Cameron, which is why he is continuing to create new films to be released.

When talking about coming up with these sequels, Cameron noted that they’re not actively trying to come up with the stories they want to tell. They already had stories in mind and took the time to plan them to span across four other films.

As for Avatar 6 and 7, they already have some ideas flowing. However, Cameron notes that given the timelines for the films, he may have to pass the baton to another director, stating “I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people”. We’re hopeful that we get to see all of the planned sequels for this film directed by him — but we know he will also be mindful of who he passes the baton to and we can’t wait to see where they take the franchise.

So far, Cameron and the film’s producer, Jon Landau have been pretty quiet about the concepts of the sequels. However, we do know that they plan to make some unexpected leaps to places that we couldn’t have even imagined.

We’re so excited to see where this franchise goes and grateful that they have creative teams who have big dreams for where these movies can go moving forward.
