More construction is coming to Disney World!

These days, construction work seems to be everywhere! The theme parks have some major changes going on, there’s a new hotel on the horizon, and the company is filing new permits weekly. Now, even the water parks are getting in on the changes because a new permit has been filed for Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon!
Disney has filed a new permit with the South Florida Water Management District! The new project, which is titled Typhoon Lagoon Backstage Parking Lot, might seem simple, but this could signal big changes for the water park.

The permit describes the project work as “a new roadway leading to a fenced-in back-stage gravel parking lot at Typhoon Lagoon within Walt Disney World Resort.” They also detail that the “proposed stormwater management system consists of two dry retention pond and four main conveyance swales that contain ditch blocks.” The work site sits just behind the water park, in the backstage area behind Crush n’ Gusher.Â

While a new parking lot might not seem like the most exciting news, it does potentially signal something about the water park’s popularity. One is that it’s popular enough to justify making way for more guests. During our latest visit to Typhoon Lagoon earlier this July, the water park was so packed that we had to park in the grass, even past Cast Member parking.

This parking lot frequently fills up, especially during the busy season. This forces Cast Members to park elsewhere on property, which can impact when and how they get to their shift. This backstage parking lot will most likely be dedicated to Cast Members, and the current Cast Parking lot will be dedicated to guests coming to the water park.

The timing of this permit could also be due to Typhoon Lagoon’s upcoming closure. Starting on September 9th, Typhoon Lagoon is closing temporarily, which is an annual occurrence for the water park. Disney’s two water parks tend to rotate which one is open, but they both are open during the summer this year. Blizzard Beach will still be open after Typhoon Lagoon closes. This permit for construction is timed perfectly so it won’t impact any guests or a large number of Cast Members while this new parking lot is being constructed.

This could make things easier for Cast Members and guests alike when Typhoon Lagoon reopens. Disney has yet to confirm an opening date for Typhoon Lagoon after its September closure, but we anticipate it will be several months. As always, be sure to keep following AllEars for more Disney news, updates, and more.
