'Tangled' Almost Got A Sequel — Here's Why Disney Canceled It

If there is one thing Disney loves to do, it’s make a sequel, especially for a princess movie. Mulan, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Moana, Frozen, and more all received one or more sequels.

However, there is one popular Princess who never got her sequel, and now we know that Disney considered it. Let’s dive into everything we know about the Tangled sequel that never was.

In a recent interview with The Direct, Nathan Greno, the director of Tangled, discussed the potential for a sequel and ultimately why it never came to be. The original Tangled was released in 2010 and was received with immense praise, and soon became a Disney Princess favorite.

So you’d think Disney would be eager to make a sequel on the coattails of the original’s success. Well, Greno revealed that they tried to do just that. He said that the original team all got together and spent hours going over the story and attempting to craft a sequel plot; however, they ultimately found they “couldn’t find a story worth telling.”

As Greno put it, “once the Beast becomes a human, what else is there to say?” Meaning, if there is nothing else to be said or gained from the story, it is best to let it sit as a stand-alone.

However, he did not want to leave the fans without a conclusion, so the team decided to create the immensely popular six-minute short Tangled Ever After, which was released in 2012 and follows Rapunzel and Eugene’s wedding day.

Now, despite never receiving a sequel, fans are still getting lots of love as the cast has been announced for the upcoming live-action Tangled. Where Teagan Croft is Rapunzel, Milo Manheim is set to play Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn, in one of the best Disney casting moves of all time, is playing Mother Gothel.

While we are sad we never got our Tangled sequel, we are SO excited to see this brand-new adaptation and see Rapunzel and Eugene fall in love again!
