Well… we have to admit we didn’t see this latest travel warning coming at all!

We’ve been keeping up with the latest travel changes, complete system shutdowns grounding flights lately, and even chaotic weather patterns and rising temperatures, but this latest bizarre travel news is one of the last things we were to have predicted to be an issue.
According to a recent article by NPR, those traveling by air (specifically on Southwest Airlines), are prone to dealing with an unfortunate mishap. It seems that the rising temperatures have led to… *checks notes*… exploding soda cans onboard their airplanes.

Yep, you read that correctly — EXPLODING SODA CANS! While Southwest claims that none of their reported 20 injuries have involved customers this summer, one such incident did result in a flight attendant requiring stitches, according to CBS News. Southwest has said the extreme heat experienced at some of their busier locations like Phoenix, Las Vegas, Austin, Dallas, Houston, and Sacramento. However, since Southwest’s process is handing in-flight beverages and snacks on board is different from airlines that serve in-flight meals, they’re looking to make changes to their process.

Chris Perry, a spokesperson for Southwest said, “We’re aware of the issue and have been taking steps to keep onboard beverages cooler, especially in our airports experiencing extreme temperatures.” Perry went on to explain the changes are being brought about out of “safety of our Employees and Customers,” and says Southwest Airlines is “taking education and mitigation measures on all heat-related hazards.” So far, the company seems to have already made changes testing out trucks with air-conditioned cargo areas in Phoenix and Las Vegas. Out of added precaution, Southwest is also asking employees to test the temperature of cans being loaded into the planes before departing and advising that cans reading a temperature about 98 degrees fahrenheit or appearing to be warped in any way be held back.

So, if you’re flying Southwest soon and you don’t see a beverage cart come down your aisle and your Flight Attendant has to offer you an alternative to your first beverage preference, try not to be defensive as they’re only trying to keep your safety and best interest in mind.

We’re not sure if the controlled temperature trucks will be a permanent fix to this beverage blunder or if there will be another solution to roll out to the affected airports, however, we trust that Southwest Airlines will come up with a widespread solution soon.
