We were live in Super Nintendo World yesterday for its opening day!

We’ve been waiting for this day for a long time and all the new experiences this land offers. One of the new offerings is a Power-Up Band, which is similar to Disney’s MagicBand+. But how similar are they really? We found out!
Price & Designs
A Power-Up Band will cost you a flat $40 for one of the six designs.

Meanwhile, most MagicBand+ bands are around $44.99, but the prices change depending on which of the many designs you buy.

Therefore, Power-Up Bands are less expensive with fewer designs, while there are lots of MagicBand+ designs for a higher price.
Function
Power-Up Bands can be used around Super Nintendo World to gather coins for your team, interact with park elements, go on “key challenges,” and participate in one final Bowser Jr. Showdown. Without them, many of the land’s interactive elements aren’t available.

Meanwhile, MagicBand+ can interact with character statues and nighttime shows, allow you to become a Bounty Hunter in Galaxy’s Edge, act as your ticket in the park, hold dining reservations, make payments, and get you into your hotel room.

This means that MagicBand+ has more capabilities inside and outside of the whole resort, whereas Power-Up Bands only enhance your experience inside Super Nintendo World, BUT without them, you miss out on a lot of what the land has to offer.
Do They Really Work?
We didn’t have many issues with our Power-Up Bands, however, we did notice that it didn’t connect properly on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, so it showed we didn’t earn any coins, which was a little disappointing. You also have to hit the bands pretty hard on the blocks around the land to get them to react. These bands don’t have to be charged though, so the bands being battery-dead shouldn’t be a problem for a while.

We’ve had our fair share of trouble with MagicBand+ in the past, especially when interacting with character statues or nighttime shows. Otherwise, MagicBand+ works relatively well for most guests. They do have to be charged though, and we know guests have run into issues with forgetting to charge them, or the bands running out of a charge, so they won’t work.

Overall, both bands have some issues that just come with using technology in theme parks. It’s a fair bet you may run into issues with either one of them on your trip.

Whether or not either of these enhancements is worth it on your vacation is totally up to you. You don’t need either one of them to have a fun, successful vacation, but they can enhance your experience. As always, stay tuned to AllEars for all the latest Universal news!
