Two BIG Problems With Wearing HOKA Shoes in Disney World

There are two things about wearing HOKAs at Disney that don’t get mentioned enough.

HOKA shoes are recommended everywhere for Disney World, and for good reason — they’re incredibly comfortable! But after wearing the Clifton 10 in the parks, there are two issues I ran into that no one really talks about, and I think they’re worth knowing before your trip.

If you’ve spent any time researching the best shoes for Disney World, chances are you’ve seen HOKA recommended over and over again. And for good reason. They’re comfortable, supportive, and made for long days on your feet, which is basically the entire Disney experience.

Specifically, I’ve been wearing the HOKA Clifton 10, and while I absolutely understand why people love them, there are two big issues I ran into that I don’t hear talked about nearly enough. Neither one is a dealbreaker, but both are things I really wish I had known before bringing them into the parks.

Here are the two biggest problems I’ve noticed with wearing HOKAs at Disney World.

Problem #1: The Heel Is…Chunky (And It Shows)

Let’s start with the one that’s more about aesthetics than performance. The Clifton 10 has a very thick, bulky heel. That’s part of what makes it so cushioned and comfortable (and I’ll never argue with comfort), but visually, it definitely makes your foot look bigger than it actually is.

If you’re someone who doesn’t care at all how your shoes look in photos, you can probably stop reading this section right now. But if you do care, if you’re even a little bit self-conscious about your feet, or you like how your outfits look in park photos, this is something you might pay attention to more than others.

In shorts, dresses, or cropped pants, the thick heel can make your feet look wider and heavier than they really are. In full-body photos in front of the castle or World Showcase backdrops, that extra bulk around the heel stands out more than I expected.

Now, is this the end of the world? No. But is it something I noticed every single day I wore them? Yes. And I think it’s worth mentioning, because comfort isn’t the only factor for everyone when choosing a park shoe.

Problem #2: They Are NOT Waterproof (And Disney Weather Will Test That)

This one matters a lot more in actual park life. HOKA shoes are not waterproof — at all. And if you’ve ever been to Disney World, you already know where this is going.

Florida weather is unpredictable on the best day. You can start the morning in full sunshine and end up in a downpour by mid-afternoon. And when it rains at Disney, it doesn’t sprinkle — it soaks. When these shoes get wet, they get really wet. The fabric absorbs water quickly, and the thick cushioning that feels so great when dry will hold onto moisture for hours. Once your socks are wet, you’re basically stuck with them for the rest of the day.

And there are very few things worse than wet shoes, wet socks, and miles of walking still ahead of you. After one too many soggy afternoons, I finally added something small to my park bag that made a huge difference.

The Simple Fix: Waterproof Shoe Covers

If you love your HOKAs but don’t want to deal with wet feet, the easiest solution I’ve found is a pair of waterproof shoe covers!

So, Are HOKAs Still Worth Wearing to Disney World?

For me, the answer is still yes — with a few caveats. The comfort of the Clifton 10 is real. They’re supportive, cushioned, and excellent for long walking days. My feet absolutely felt better in these than in most traditional sneakers.

But they do look bulky in the heel, which might matter to you. And they are not waterproof, which absolutely matters at Disney World. With waterproof shoe covers in your bag, that second problem is easy to fix.

At the end of the day, no shoe is perfect — especially for a place like Disney World. But knowing these two issues ahead of time makes it much easier to decide if HOKAs are the right fit for your trip.
