When it comes to getting around the U.S., flying is usually the best way to do it. That’s why we almost always fly to Disney World, after all.

However, flying does come with its share of problems. Sometimes there are long lines at security (especially during the busy spring break travel season). Sometimes our flights get delayed due to weather or technical issues. However, what you may not be thinking about is how a solar eclipse could affect your flight.
There will be a solar eclipse on April 8th, and parts of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada will be in the path of totality (meaning this is where you’ll be able to see the eclipse in full). Well, that means that a lot of people will be traveling to those areas around that time. In fact, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), has recently issued a warning about how air travel might be impacted by the eclipse from April 7th through 10th.

The FAA expects that travel at airports in the path of the eclipse will be impacted (although those delays could also potentially impact other flights, as well). The FAA warned that all aircraft should be prepared to be held in the air longer than usual, rerouted, or have new departure times issued due to higher traffic volume than normal.
In addition to the eclipse, those dates also fall within the spring break travel season, so you’ve got a sort of double whammy that could potentially cause issues.

The FAA also warned that parking at airports could be limited, especially at the smaller airports located within the eclipse’s path. A full list of airports that fall within the path can be found here.
So what should you do if you’re flying on those days? You’ll want to make sure you have a way for the airline to notify you in case of a delay. Sign up for text alerts and download the airline’s app (be sure to turn notifications on) to stay updated on your flight’s status.
