Ever since he returned to the role of Disney CEO, Bob Iger has made some controversial decisions for the company.
From restructuring the company to initiating job cuts, there have been quite a few business changes made to help Disney get back on track financially. Now, it’s possible that Disney could sell some major assets to help reach its goals.
A few months ago, we reported on an interview in which Bob Iger shared that Disney was considering selling off TV assets like the ABC network. Iger said the company would be “expansive” in how it thinks about traditional TV, with the door being left open to selling the networks it owns. “They may not be core to Disney,” he said.
Now, during The Walt Disney Company’s Q4 earnings call, Iger has spoken on the subject again. He said, “We have been considering various options for each of our networks. While we’ve been taking a look at the linear networks, we’ve uncovered a number of ways to reduce costs.” Also stating, “Our linear assets are still profitable. We are looking in an open-minded way, but that shouldn’t suggest that anything is imminent.”
In terms of ESPN, Iger has shared that the sports media company is up in income and revenue for the past two years, with this past year being one of the strongest in terms of rating. The CEO stated, “We believe we have an opportunity to strengthen that hand by bringing on strategic partners to offer marketing support, tech support, or content support. We’ve been talking with a few possible partners — announcements will be forthcoming.”
These announcements follow the latest one stating that ESPN BET will be launching soon adding a sports betting platform under the company. And for those wondering about the sale of India Hotstar, well Iger commented, “We like being in business in India. We’d like to strengthen our hand.”
