Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy to Open March 31!

Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy, a new show featuring the bright red star car of the Cars movie franchise, is set to open this coming March 31 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The new show will be housed in Sunset Showcase near Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and will immerse guests in the world of Pixar Animation Studios’ Cars films.

According to details released several weeks ago during a Disney Channel special, during the show you’ll be face to face with racing legend Lightning McQueen, along with his friends Mater and Cruz Ramirez.

Guests will take on the role of rookie racer as they enter the theater and find Lightning McQueen live on stage. McQueen and the entire audience will be enveloped by a giant, wraparound screen that is nearly two stories tall and stretches more than 200 feet from end to end.

McQueen will demonstrate racing techniques on a new simulator and share career highlights with his guests, with a few twists and turns along the way. Lightning’s pals from Radiator Springs chime in with their support, to help him as he gears up for a new challenge.

  1. Interested, but thinking the queue length will be extreme and wondering what age group they’re going for — all ages, or primaril the younger set?

Frankly, I thought Club Villain was an excellent use of this space… great food, very entertaining and intimate meet-and-greets with the villains. Perhaps the best value in evening dining/entertainment I’ve encountered at WDW. I also think it’s a concept that they could easily replicate and bring back on an occasional basis, either at Sunset Showcase or elsewhere, so here’s hoping…!

    1. Obviously written by someone who does not bring boys to WDW. Girls have the Princesses. Boys not so much. So the Racing Academy will be great for the boys. If you don’t like it or do not bring boys, feel free to skip this attraction. There are plenty of attractions – try something else.

      1. Excellent guess Jim. I’ve got 2 girls. However they never were into the princess thing so much either. Lucky me. They always liked the animal characters.
