REVIEW: We Spent $60 on Cake at Disney World, and It Was Worth Every Penny

When we’re at EPCOT or Hollywood Studios, we’ll always stop by the Cake Bake Shop at the BoardWalk for a decadent sweet treat.

Hummingbird Cake

The Cake Bake Shop Bakery has three brand-new menu items – two cakes and one stuffed croissant – so we had to rope drop the bakery and try them both!

First, we tried the Daily Filled Croissant for $16. The flavor rotates daily between chocolate and strawberry, and we got the chocolate version. This is a freshly baked, all-butter croissant, dipped in rich Callebaut Belgian chocolate, stuffed with a chocolate mousse, then topped with Valrhona French dark chocolate crunchy pearls.

Daily Filled Croissant

The croissant is their standard butter croissant — super buttery, flaky, and salty. The chocolate mousse inside is super rich and sweet; it reminded us of a Lindt chocolate truffle. The dark chocolate coating balanced the sweet mousse, and the crispy chocolate pearls added a crunchy texture. While this tasted great, the chocolate melted fast – grab a fork!

Daily Filled Croissant

Next up was the Hummingbird Cake for $22. This cake features three layers of banana spice cake with chopped Georgia pecans and crushed pineapple. It is filled and frosted with their signature cream cheese frosting and topped with silk blue flowers.

Hummingbird Cake

This cake is super-soft with a moist crumb and features lots of bananas mixed into the batter. There was a good amount of chopped pecans, but the pineapple flavor was very weak, and we didn’t get the fruit pieces in most bites. The cream cheese frosting is rich and airy. We enjoyed this cake, but because of the lack of pineapple, it didn’t taste enough like a Hummingbird Cake to earn the name.

Lastly, we got the Coconut Passion Fruit Cake for $22. This cake has three layers of coconut cake filled with homemade passion fruit curd, frosted with coconut buttercream, and covered in fresh, shaved coconut.

Coconut Passion Fruit Cake

This cake features a moist coconut sponge cake that’s very strong. The passionfruit flavor was very bright, tart, and strong, and we still got lots of coconut flavor. The passionfruit is evenly distributed, making every bite have the perfect blend. The texture is super soft, and the crunchy shredded coconut adds variety.
