Recently, thousands of travelers faced flight delays and cancelations due to a global IT outage. The incident happened on July 19th, though some airlines are still dealing with the repercussions days later.

While many airlines have resumed normal service, it seems that Delta Air Lines is still reporting cancelations and delays due to technology issues. In fact, these issues have led to an investigation.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is looking into the excessive delays and cancelations at Delta Air Lines and has opened an investigation into the recent flight disruptions, according to NPR.

Per the U.S. Department of Transportation, the department has received a “high volume of consumer complaints” following the IT outage, prompting an investigation.

Thousands of travelers have taken to social media to share their stories. One user reported that on July 24th, “Every single flight out of LGA is either delayed or canceled.”
@DeltaNewsHub @Delta this is so bad. Things are not better, the evening of July 24. Every single flight out of LGA is either delayed or cancelled. I’m rebooked automatically for 2 days from now for a $12 meal voucher in NYC! $12 buys nothing in most places especially NYC! pic.twitter.com/yvZnOmGR5C

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg released a statement on the investigation reading, “We have made clear to Delta that they must take care of their passengers and honor their customer service commitments,” adding, “This is not just the right thing to do, it’s the law, and our department will leverage the full extent of our investigative and enforcement power to ensure the rights of Delta’s passengers are upheld.”

Delta Air Lines noted that they are fully cooperating with the Department of Transportation. On July 21st, the Airline released a statement on X reading, in part, “We apologize for the disruptions many customers are experiencing. Canceling a flight is always a last resort & not taken lightly.”
As we continue operational recovery, we apologize for the disruptions many customers are experiencing. Canceling a flight is always a last resort & not taken lightly. We take seriously the trust placed in us to deliver the reliability customers have come to expect from Delta. 1/8
