Although many of the Disney Parks may be closed, there are still plenty of people traveling across the country.

While there are different health and safety guidelines being implemented in businesses nationwide, airports are seeing some big changes to protect travelers and employees, too.

According to Click Orlando News, the TSA will be adopting new health and safety measures as they change the airport security screening process. While they have already started to put these plans in place with more airport checkpoints, the TSA aims to have these changes used in airports across the country by mid-June.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske has stated that they are “committed to making prudent changes to our screening processes to limit physical contact and increase physical distance as much as possible.” Currently, the TSA is implementing new procedures around boarding passes, security screenings, packing, physical distancing, and facial protection.

Travelers should keep a hold of their boarding passes and place them on the boarding pass reader themselves. Travelers should hold up their boarding passes so the TSA officer can visually inspect it. Whenever a passenger is going through security, they should place their carry-on food items into a clear plastic bag in a separate bin. This allows social distancing since food usually triggers an alarm during the screening process that TSA officers inspect. By placing food in a separate area, there will be little to no contact of carry-on bags.

Travelers should make sure they are abiding by the packing guidelines and leave prohibited items at home. TSA is now allowing one 12 oz liquid hand sanitizer container in carry-on bags that must be placed in a bin during screenings. There will be distancing in security checkpoints with social distancing markers and line staggering. TSA officers will be wearing facial protection, and the TSA recommends that passengers do the same. People going through security should also remove all the items from their pockets and place them directly in a carry-on bag (instead of a bin), along with their phones and belts to “reduce touch-points” during security screenings.

If you haven’t been to an airport recently, there are already safety measures in place, including:

• Reduced security lane usage due to the reduction in passenger volume.
• All TSA officers at checkpoints wearing masks and gloves.
• TSA officers optionally wearing eye protection and clear plastic face shields at some locations.
• TSA officers will continue the practice of changing gloves after each pat-down.
• Plastic shielding installed at many travel document checking podiums, divest, bag search and drop off locations.
• TSA officers practicing social distancing.
• Routine cleaning and disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces in the screening checkpoint area.
