5 Things That Shocked Us About Disney’s Live-Action ‘Aladdin’ Trailer

The new trailer for Disney’s live-action ‘Aladdin’ came out a few days ago and it took a LOT of us by surprise.

The trailer, much different from that of the short teaser that came out a while ago, actually surprised us and made us even more excited to see the film. Here’s why:

 1.  The Likability

When the teaser trailer for Disney’s live-action ‘Aladdin’ was released, the Disney-loving viewing public seemed more than a bit upset. Not only that, but the film actually became sort of a laughingstock.

Online, people mocked Genie, the characterization, and the film as a whole. It seemed like most folks weren’t really as excited as Disney would have expected them to be. We also felt the teaser trailer was such a let-down. Like most teaser trailers it didn’t show us much and, sadly, what it did show us was an awkward-looking Will Smith as Genie. How could he ever rival the performance that Robin Williams gave in the original animated film?

Then, the full trailer was released and, man, did Disney change our minds! This trailer showed off the film in a beautiful light, highlighting some really great moments without giving too much away. The trailer gave us action, humor, and fantasy all in one, showing us that the film has promise.

2. The Cinematography

The cinematography of the trailer just blew us away. The visual storytelling was outstanding. At the beginning of the trailer, we felt as though we were running and jumping with Aladdin.  And then the rose petals fall as Aladdin and Jasmine see each other for the first time. Just like they seemed to, we felt butterflies in our tummies! This continued throughout the entire trailer. Not only were the images displayed beautiful, but each one evoked so much emotion, making us truly eager to watch the entire film!

3. The Costuming

We all know what Jasmine’s outfit is SUPPOSED to look like — let’s face it, ever since the film came out in 1992, there have been lots of little girls wearing that exotic turquoise costume for Halloween, character breakfasts, and just for playing dress-up. But when the concept art for Jasmine’s outfit, as well as for Aladdin and Genie, was released a few months ago, people didn’t seem too pleased. Many felt like the costumes strayed too far from the original film and didn’t make sense, but we have to say those costumes looked so gorgeous in the trailer! Not only are they intricately detailed, but they perfectly recall the original film without being an exact match.

4. Genie

OK, we can all admit that Genie was a huge bust when the teaser trailer aired. Not only does Will Smith have huge Robin Williams-sized shoes to fill, but translating the animated, ever-changing genie into a flesh-and-blood — and blue — person really stacks the odds against him.

Honestly, we weren’t sure he was the right fit and the teaser trailer just confirmed our suspicions that Smith might not be up to the task. But, we really feel like Will Smith redeemed himself in the newest trailer. He seemed much more likable and funny and it was nice knowing that we wouldn’t constantly be staring at him in his awkward blue face. Do we think he will live up to Robin Williams’ incredible turn as the original Genie? We don’t know, but we’re more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt now than we were before.

5. The Humor

This short trailer had a lot of cute and funny little moments, especially between Genie and Aladdin. This is good news, because the relationship between these two characters is such an essential part of the original film. Honestly, we were shocked that the trailer actually made us giggle. So much of the humor from the animated film came from Williams’ improvisational riffs — I we weren’t sure that the remake could come close to replicating that without coming off as a cheesy let-down. The humor in the trailer gave us hope that the new film will be just as hilarious!

If only we had a lamp to wish on to make it so!

  1. I will agree that the costumes look amazing but I just don’t get this need to turn all the cartoons in live action movies, especially when it’s something like Jungle Book where you’re going from a cartoon to a computer generated cartoon with a live actor inserted. Disney did that way back in Song of the South. Same with the new Dumbo movie although in that they’ve inserted an animated elephant into a live action movie (oh wait, they did that in Mary Poppins).
