Tips about Epcot, Resorts and Strollers

Port Orleans Riverside - We just returned from a trip to the World, staying at Port Orleans Riverside. My daughter wanted to get a hair wrap at the station located behind the hotel. The price listed was $2 per inch. I should have asked before we even started what all the charges would be, but I didn't, and once her hair was wrapped I was informed that we HAD to purchase $5 worth of beads -- any other beads would be an additional $5. After all the hair is wrapped and beaded, THEN they measure the hair. What I thought was going to be maybe a $20 cost ended up being $30... I was really disappointed in the whole transaction. Make sure you ask what ALL the charges will be before you get any hair wraps! - Sharmon S.

All Resorts - Disney resort guests should take advantage of theme park and resort delivery options. Any package can be delivered to the front of the four main theme parks (and also the "back" [International Gateway] for Epcot). If you plan on staying in the park for about three hours after your purchase you can send your package -- large or small -- free of charge to Package Pickup. No more worrying about carrying that favorite souvenir on Space Mountain or Rock 'n' Roller Coaster! If you are a WDW resort guest you can have your purchases delivered directly to your resort. Packages will be sent to the main gift shop at your resort on the day after your purchase. (The resort delivery option is not available on the last day/night of your stay because packages may not arrive before you depart the resort, but you can still send your packages to the front of the park for Package Pickup.) - Rob C.

Animal Kingdom Lodge - A reader writes in about the new "Dining with Animal Specialists" at Sanaa that we reported on last week: The best way to book the new "Dining with Animal Specialists" offering is to call the Safari line for Wanyama Safari at (407) 938-4755. That gets you the Animal Kingdom Lodge Itinerary Planning Office. Calling the Kidani Front Desk will actually get you the call center, and they know almost nothing about the new offering and can't book it.

When my wife and I took our grandsons to Disney world, we kept them cool in their strollers by using a small 6-inch battery-operated fan. I drilled two small holes in each fan in the bottom and put two wire ties through the holes to the fans and connected the wire ties. Then I put wire ties through the connected ties and the clips. All I had to do then was clip them on the front of the strollers and turn on the fans. They boys kept cool the whole time we were in the parks and even fell asleep. We received a lot of comments from people that saw the fans and would ask us where we got them. - Ron Bitler

Please remember to keep your patio doors locked and secure your valuables, even when staying in the relative safety of a Disney resort. An article in the Orlando Sentinel a few days ago reported that the Orange County Sheriff's Office recently arrested two suspects trying to enter a room at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa through a French door. There have been more than 20 cases of electronics stolen at that resort and others near by since late December. According to the article, Disney has been working closely with law enforcement throughout the investigation and has put additional security patrols in place. Disney has also encouraged its housekeeping team to ensure patio doors are locked, and literature has been left in the rooms to remind guests to lock all doors and secure valuables. - Editor Deb Koma

Epcot - I wanted to make people aware now that Soarin' is closed that Sunshine Seasons closes at 7 p.m. We were going to Epcot for the evening and were hoping to have dinner at Sunshine Seasons because they are so great for people with food troubles. If your stroller doesn't have a place to stash your "stuff", bring a carabiner hook, and then you can hook bags, backpacks, etc. to the back of your stroller. - Mary

Epcot - We found that the Electric Umbrella restaurant at Epcot has free drink refills... not only for soft drinks but for apple juice as well, which worked out great for our little one. This is the only "quick service" restaurant we visited that didn't give us a juice box when we ordered her a kid's meal with juice. - Michelle P.

To survive large crowds, I suggest that you go out early, at the time the parks open. Bring just a snack for breakfast if you can't manage to get up early enough to eat breakfast at your resort. You then will have 3-4 hours of park time before lunch. Since lunch is when the crowd volume really picks up, this is when you should go back to your resort to refresh and relax by the pool, or you could go shopping. Then go back to a park after you eat dinner. Leave the park before any fireworks shows to avoid long waits at the bus stops. Of course, if you want to experience more, then you will have to get out in the crowds. I've been so many years (at all times of year) and I've learned my lesson. The one thing that will drain your energy and make you more ill and fussy, is fighting a crowd daily. That's no vacation. Find time to rest and relax. - Melody Moore

We had a 2- and 4-year-old in a side-by-side stroller. Our stroller was our Sherpa each day. Because you are often in a hurry to collapse a stroller for a Disney bus, train, etc., we had to think of a way to quickly empty the countless loose items from the pockets/pouches on the stroller. To do this, we used several of the snap-links and carabiners that I had to hang things off the side of the main handle of the stroller. A small/modified diaper bag went on one snaplink. We had a plastic Disney shopping bag full of souvenirs on another. A small, soft/collapsible bottle cooler, now used to keep water bottles cold, on another. A camera case on yet another snaplink. Then connect several of these snaplinks together. My wife would grab the girls out of stroller, I'd only have to grab one or two snap links, and away we went. It was quick and very convenient. Likewise, when we parked the stroller to go on an attraction, it was easy to simply grab one or two snaplinks off the handle (e.g., camera case) and go. - Dave
