We are adventurous eaters in our family (our kids eat spicy Indian and Chinese food since toddlers) so we all loved this restaurant. I gave it 8/10 only because it isn't as amazing as say Jiko or Flying Fish. 2 of us are vegan and thought the vegan dishes were really great. Older son got a seafood stew and said it was really good.
Daughter 12 still raving about chicken soup from kids menu. Boring people who just want to eat as much meat as possible probably won't like this place. If you think Applebee's-type places have great food them you probably won't like this place. If, however, you like Thai food, Indian food and other flavorful cuisines, then you will find some good dishes here.

Pros:

Best vegan food at MK, not crowded at non-peak times

Cons:

"exotic" and "spicy" for boring people who love meat

We were in Orlando for the Megacon, Comic Book convention and we decided to pop into MK for dinner and a couple of rides.

Skipper's Canteen was a new-to-us restaurant and it was a definite treat. The menu is South Pacific inspired with a few curry based dishes. Prior to writing this review, I tried finding other reviews of this place and found that the reviews were not favorable. My experience was different as I found the food to be tasty and the atmosphere an extension of the famous Jungle Cruise. Further, we were told as we were leaving that many of the artifacts on display came from the Pleasure Island Adventurer's Club, a place I enjoyed years ago.

To the food specifically: my daughter and I shared the Falafel appetizer; 5 fried falafel balls with a decent amount of hummus and thinly sliced radishes. This was really delicious and had a spice level that let you know it was there but was not overwhelming.

After the appy, DD had the Seafood Stew and I had the Char Siu Pork.

Ok, so maybe DD did not choose wisely as she did not fully enjoy her meal as much as I enjoyed mine. I am pretty sure she did not like the mussels and she said the calamari were a bit tough. This dish also had shrimp, scallops, a prawn, and some octopus chunks. The stew was a little spicy with a coconut curry flavor.

My pork was very nicely cooked and flavored. It included three nicely sized slices of pork and three smaller chunks making it pretty substantial in that manner. The pork was flavored in a sesame soy glaze that was not overly salty and imparted a nice flavor to the meat. Where the dish fell apart was the single stalk of Chinese broccoli and a small scoop of steamed rice. In my humble opinion, either a second stalk of broccoli or a stir fry of mixed vegetables and about 50% more rice would have made this dish much better. Don't get me wrong, I didn't leave hungry. But, it seemed chintzy to me.

So overall, our experience was positive but there is room for improvement.

Pros:

Theming!

Cons:

Easy to make bad selections.

We enjoyed a late lunch at Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen on Sunday, with our family of 7 adults. The service provided by Skipper Zita was excellent. Three of us had the "Tastes like chicken because it is" meal, and all of us loved it. My husband had the lamb chops, which he immensely enjoyed last trip, and he was not disappointed! He says it's one of the best lamb entrees he's ever had. My adult sons both ordered the seafood stew, and though they enjoyed it very much, they both felt it just wasn't enough food. We will definitely eat here again.

Pros:

Great food, Great Service

Cons:

seafood stew could have been more filling for growing boys

Let me just say that I love Skipper Canteen's and have reservations booked again for October (I have already had dinner here twice). Our service was great and the food was very flavorful on March 26th. However, check-in was very disorganized. We waited to be seated 20 minutes past our reserved time, only to be seated in a half empty restaurant. I don't understand...Needlesstosay, we are coming back. This is a really great restaurant, and the menu options are unique and very tasty. I'm just hoping our late seating was a fluke...

Pros:

Decor and Food

Cons:

Waited 20 Minutes Past Reservation

Had lunch here on Oct 23. Entree choices were not the usual, which was nice. Food was very good, with an Asian and African flair. Not my cup of tea, but what I had (tastes like chicken) was really good, and my wife and friends loved it. Solid choice.

Pros:

Food, variety

Cons:

none

This restaurant is a lovely addition to the Magic Kingdom, the theming is well thought out and the atmosphere is perfect match for the Jungle Cruise ride. Our server was attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu and helped point out the best items on the menu. On our server’s suggestion, we started with the Schweitzer Slush, which turned out to be an excellent choice; it was very refreshing after an afternoon in the park. We also ordered the Shu Mai appetizer, steak and fish entrees. All the dishes were great, making this one of the best places to eat in the Magic Kingdom.

Pros:

Food, service

Cons:

price

My hubby and I ate an early dinner here on September 13, 2016, before the start of the MNSS Halloween Party. Of the three dining rooms, I can really only recommend the Library. The main mess hall is open air and can be a bit noisy and the other back room was near the waiter's station, so silverware clatter was constant. We asked nicely to be moved to the Library and were quickly and politely accommodated. In my opinion, it is the coolest room. Quieter, but decorated so beautifully with carved dragons and snakes. One circular table is surrounded by beautifully-mounted butterflies. Unusual stained glass light fixtures everywhere, even in the bathrooms. I loved the decor!

The food is fine, but nothing we got too excited about. I had the Tastes Like Chicken because it is! and it was a decent-sized portion of white meat that had been cooked a bit too long and the coating a bit too thick for my taste. My hubby had the Char Sui Pork and he enjoyed the flavor of the meat. The rice was a little bland and the Chinese broccoli was just okay. So, I would have liked maybe better side options or something to help it out.

Don't know if we will go back or not, but it's a nice one-time adventure.

Pros:

Decor, especially stained glass light fixtures

Cons:

Can be noisy

We came as soon as they announced they would take Tables in Wonderland. The hostess was very entertaining; the servers less so, but they were quite busy. The hot and sour soup was the most delicious I ever had, but it is very very spicy hot. My husband liked the arepas appetizer very much. I had the duck noodle bowl and was very surprised that the duck pieces were way too large to easily handle with chopsticks, and worse yet, still had the fatty skin attached. I think they should trim off the skin and cut the pieces bite-size. The broth had a very good flavor and it was fun slurping up the noodles. My husband's stew was good-tasting and interesting; it had a lot of potatoes. We shared a kungaloosh dessert, and I really liked the bananas and ice cream part. I love chocolate, but the cake part seemed more like a brownie and was more dried out than it should have been around the edges. I didn't like the coffee dust stuff at all. We got plenty to eat here and it was very tasty overall.

Pros:

good food, small dining rooms very nice

Cons:

no wine

My family (3 adults) was there on the 4th day they were open. We had about a 15 minute wait and were texted when our table was ready. We ate in the large room and thought it was comfortable, well themed, and our server and host/hostesses were very entertaining. We really enjoyed the bread and dip, Arepas, A Lot of Steak Salad, Shu Mai. They were all very flavorable and a little spicy. I was surprised at how spicy the salad was - and I love hot and spicy. Don't miss the Arepas and Shu Mai. The only disappointing dish was the Noodle Bowl. It was described as "like Pho" which it was, but not as good. If your children are strictly chicken fingers and fries types of eaters, maybe not a good choice of restaurant, but otherwise great new choice at MK.

Pros:

Interesting Food

Cons:

Not good for all children
