Nearby Hazmat Crisis Could Affect Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm

There’s something big happening in Garden Grove, California, and it’s possible it could affect your upcoming vacation, or your life in general if you live in the area.

A hazmat crisis is currently affecting the area, and could spread to surrounding areas, which would include Disneyland Resort (seven miles away) and Knott’s Berry Farm (five miles away). Here’s what you need to know about this developing situation.

The Orange County Register has reported that a hazmat incident at GKN Aerospace has already caused 40,000 people in an impact zone to evacuate, and could get worse. The crisis began on Thursday, May 21st, then got worse the following day on Friday, May 22nd. As of 9:50 AM ET on Saturday, May 23rd, the most recent update is that Orange County Fire Authority crews have stabilized the tank’s temperature in hopes of buying time to avoid a disaster.

When speaking about the situation, a Knott’s Berry Farm official said, “The safety and well-being of our guests and team members is a cornerstone of our business. We are working closely with our partners at the Orange County Fire Authority to actively monitor the situation. At this time, the park has not been impacted.” 

Disneyland officials have also commented, saying that they are actively monitoring the situation, taking guidance from local authorities, and are supporting Cast Members impacted by the evacuation order. Currently, both resorts remain open, as there is no threat to them at this time.

According to The Orange County Register, should the chemical tank explode, the blast radius would not reach Disneyland, although the Garden Grove area does have some hotels near the current evacuation zone. Governor Gavin Newson has declared a state of emergency, as well. This is an ongoing situation, so we’ll keep an eye out for updates.
