Big news came out of Disney’s Hollywood Studios recently, and many people simply weren’t prepared for the announcement.
We knew that the new Monsters, Inc. Land coming to the park would likely take the spot of an existing area, and it’s just been confirmed that Muppets Courtyard will close to make way for the new land. This means that Muppet*Vision 3D, the last project the creator of the Muppets, Jim Henson, worked on before he passed away, will be no more. And now, the Jim Henson Company has released a statement about the decision.
Muppet*Vision 3D opened on May 16th, 1991, and was a partnership between the Jim Henson Company, Walt Disney Studios, and Walt Disney Imagineering. It’s a family-friendly show in a large, heavily-themed theater with tons of charming details.
You get to see all of your favorite Muppet friends like Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fonzie, Animal, Beaker, Dr. Honeydew, and so many more. Many Disney World and Muppets fans love this show, but we have hope that it’s not the end! In the Jim Henson Company’s new statement, which you can read in full below, they state, “As we learn of the show’s upcoming closure in its current form at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we look forward to Muppet*Vision 3D’s next act.”
Disney announced that the Muppets will be taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, replacing the ride’s current Aerosmith theme! Disney stated, “To make way for the monsters, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends will be moving right along to Sunset Boulevard! But there’s more to the story: The Muppets will be taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival!”
Disney also noted, “As we move forward with these changes, we are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future,” which leads us to believe that Disney has more plans for the Muppets.
We’re looking forward to hearing more about this transition, as well as the future of Muppet*Vision 3D, so stay tuned to AllEars!

Are you excited for Monsters Inc. and the Muppets move, or grieving the loss of Muppets Courtyard? Tell us in the comments!
I few years ago, there was a muppet show at Liberty Square. My wife and I looked forward to the show and were happy when it was running while we were nearby. I think this we be nice for a return.
Taking over a roller coaster? That is the consolation for taking away a great experience? More proof, if any is needed, that Disney only cares about the thrill ride crowd. There is little reason for me to go to Hollywood Studios as it is. I don’t do any rides that might induce motion sickness. And what about the very young? Those that aren’t old enough or tall enough for most rides? This is giving them the message to get back in the stroller. There is nothing for you here. Sad, very sad.
Iconic projects by world renowned and broadly loved artistic inspirational people like Jim Henson should NOT be destroyed to make ‘room’.
The reason Disney should preserve special, artistic elements is because they are special art.
Disney management in the last 10 years has a hit or miss record with instituting new projects. Need I point out how awful it was to retire Reflections of Earth to put up the ridiculous eyesores, and substandard show associated with the dark stargate and black video tacos at Epcot?
Leave the beloved, artistically special and creatively iconic things alone and build new things in new spaces.
Otherwise Disney management will blow another few billion dollar$ on something doomed to fail like the NBA experience or Strange World or Tiana’s slip ‘n’ slide girl boss ride while destroying stuff that is already wonderful and works well.
