There is, of course, between panels and show premieres, shopping and outside installations, more content at San Diego Comic-Con than any dozen people could hope to experience.
This year we were lucky enough to get help covering some of the many Disney-related presentations as Friend to AllEars Alex Reif w̶a̶s̶ d̶r̶a̶f̶t̶e̶d̶ volunteered to write up a few of the ones he attended.
Here’s his report on the upcoming Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History.
Independence Hall, Trinity Church, Mount Vernon, Mount Rushmore, and the Statue of Liberty in Paris all have something in common: They were all important locations in Disney’s National Treasure franchise. Now fans can add the Alamo and Graceland to that list with new details revealed about National Treasure: Edge of History at San Diego Comic-Con. And we got another piece of big news during the panel: Harvey Keitel will reprise his role as Peter Sadusky in the series.
“Will we see Nicholas Cage?” a fan asked during the Q&A portion of the panel. “We wanted him, but he’s very busy,” executive producer Marianne Wibberley replied. “But who’s to say?” she added. It wasn’t a yes, but it also wasn’t a no. Later, another attendee asked if we would see Jon Voigt. The answer: “There is someone else you will see from the movies.” Again, not a no. And they weren’t talking about Justin Bartha, who was previously confirmed to return as Riley Poole.
Production just wrapped in Baton Rouge where the cast and crew quickly bonded together. When asked about the fun they had on set, Zuri Reed shared that they all love to sing. The Comic-Con crowd demanded an example and, without a pitch pipe, they all began to harmonize on demand. The cast also talked about the family-like atmosphere created by Jerry Bruckheimer Productions on set.
The biggest name attached to the cast is Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays billionaire treasure hunter Billie. Through a video message, we saw the actress in costume on the set and learned a little bit more about Billie. She is the antagonist of the main character Jess, who is in search of something that can help answer a question about her family’s past.
Cormac and Marianne Wibberley were producers and writers on the original films and had been looking for a way to resume the story for years. The solution came through the idea of an immigrant on a bus studying for her citizenship test, which led to the creation of the character Jess, a Mexican American DREAMer played by Lisette Olivera. The actress shared that her character’s journey starts when her mother is diagnosed with cancer, prompting her to seek a lost Pan-American treasure that contains the secrets of her family’s past.
In the series, Jess is aided by a group of friends who each lend their own expertise to the adventure. Liam (Jake Austin Walker) comes from a long line of treasure hunters, Oren (Antonio Cipriano) is an entrepreneur with an obsession with conspiracy theories, Ethan (Jordan Rodrigues) is Jess’ oldest friend who is studying law, and Tasha (Zuri Reed) is a social media expert with a lot of knowledge of government tracking software. Also on the panel was Lyndon Smith, who plays a rookie FBI Agent who ends up wrapped up in the conspiracy that Jess brings to her.
Disney+ released the teaser trailer and first poster for the series immediately after the Comic-Con panel concluded. We’ll have to wait a little longer for an official streaming date, but in the meantime, you can refamiliarize yourself with both National Treasure films on Disney+.
