NEWS: Florida Hits State Daily Record for New COVID-19 Cases

As the situation with COVID-19 continues to change and develop, AllEars will be bringing you the latest relevant news that could affect a theme park visit.

Now that the holidays have arrived, concerns about the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus have grown as more states record an increase in cases.

As a result, many countries and states have started to implement new health and safety precautions, travel restrictions, masking requirements, and more.

On December 21st, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) upgraded Orange County, Florida, the county in which Disney World resides, to the highest COVID-19 tier. At the moment, the Omicron strain of COVID-19 is the dominant variant in wastewater in the state. And now, the state of Florida continues to break records with COVID-19 cases.

According to The Orlando Sentinel, Florida reported 32,850 new cases as of yesterday, breaking the record for daily cases in the state set previously from the day before. The 7-day average for new cases as of yesterday is 21,125, which is the first time the average number of cases has been over 20,000 since the summer.  There has also been a recent surge in testing as many people have been getting tested ahead of the holidays.

Disney World currently has a policy that requires all guests regardless of vaccination status to wear approved facial coverings at all indoor locations and on select transportation.  Universal Orlando recently updated its mask policy to require masks indoors, as well as on all attractions.

  1. The Governor of Florida is doing a poor job in mitigating the spread of this virus. DeSantis needs to exercise leadership encourage Floridians to get vaccinated and stop threatening businesses and local government from exercising their rights to impose mask mandates to protect its people.
