Beer and Pizza Tasting
October 4, 2011
We had the opportunity to attend the very first Beer and Pizza tasting at Via Napoli on October 4, and we really enjoyed it! Guests checked in at the restaurant's podium and were then directed to wait in the lobby until the event was ready for seating. This resulted in quite a crowded lobby as event guests and regular dining room guests were crammed into the small, echo-y room; but soon we were being directed into the restaurant's dedicated event space to be seated.
Throughout the afternoon (the event is two hours long) we were treated to four different bottled beers and four different dishes. While it looked at first as though each attendee would only receive half a bottle of each beer, it soon became apparent that that half bottle was only the beginning! Guests were continually asked if they'd like more of the beer currently being tasted. However, glasses were removed once guests had finished and a new pairing was being served.
The dishes were truly lovely, which isn't much of a surprise -- Via Napoli has been a delight of a restaurant since its opening in 2010. Guests were treated to an appetizer, an individual pizza, a portion of veal parmesan, and dessert. The event was a bit different from other tastings I've attended at the Festival. We were served some interesting beers and some great food, but there was very little "discussion" about the pairings. We were greeted by our host at the beginning of the event, then told a bit about the first beer we were being served, but that was pretty much it by way of description. In fact, we didn't hear from anyone again until the Chef came out at the end of the tasting to thank us for coming. I found this to be very odd, but am hoping that the feedback from guests will influence the powers that be to do a bit more education about the beers and the pairings throughout the upcoming tastings.
Do you disagree? Or did you feel the same? We'd love to hear your thoughts on if you attended a Beer and Pizza Tasting -- please leave your comments on our Food and Wine Festival Rate and Review page HERE.
