.) Each payday we figure out how much we can set aside for Disney Dollars or gift cards. We purchase these once a month. Sometimes it's $10, sometimes it's $50. If the money goes into the savings account, it might be used for emergencies (like when our son had his two front teeth knocked out on a dare). This way, the vacation money is the vacation money, and it can't go anywhere else. - DShealer 1681 |
.) My wife and I struggled to find a responsible way to allow our children (10 and 6) to have spending money, but not carry actual negotiable currency. The problem with Disney Dollars or the Gift Cards is that if they are lost or stolen, the money is gone. We as parents don't carry significant amounts of cash because of the very same risk; why have a different message for the kids? The final solution? Monopoly money. The kids were given their predetermined spending money in fake cash, which they carried. When they wanted to buy something they would have to pay Dad with their money, and Dad would stick it on the room charge or credit card, etc. The kids could see how much money they had left and decided how badly they wanted a particular item. We used this on our recent 12-day trip and it worked beautifully. The kids spread their spending carefully across the entire trip and we didn't worry about the cash when my daughter left her purse, which we recovered several hours later, at a Kidcot stop. - James Steele 1260 |
.) I have a spending money tip geared to teenagers that is easier for them to manage than cash or Disney Dollars, and easier for me than handing out cash. On our March spring break trip to WDW, I surprised my two teenagers with Disney Gift Cards that I purchased at the World of Disney Store at Downtown Disney. They each liked having their own card and not juggling change. I learned the card is usable at Disney owned and operated merchandise, dining and recreation locations where credit cards are accepted, including the Disney shops in the Orlando Airport and Disney Cruise Line onboard the ship. (Some carts and outdoor vendors at the parks do not accept the card.) The balance prints on the receipt after each transaction, has no expiration, can be used with other forms of payment to complete a purchase, is reloadable ($5-$1500!), and can be kept as a souvenir. It's a cool card with Mickey on the front. Now that I know about the card, I plan to reload them for my daughter's high school band trip to Disney World next week. Purchase and use details can be found at DisneyGiftCard.com. - Sandy Marks 1257 |
.) Regarding the dilemma of finding yourself at the end of the year with Disney "reward dollars" still left on your current card, you can redeem them at any Disney Store for Disney Dollars. Just don't forget to take them with you on your next visit to WDW or DL. - Keith Link 1203 |
.) Hop on the monorail and head to the Contemporary Resort! Riding the monorail in the rain is an experience in itself, especially in the front. We head to the Contemporary game room, which in my opinion is the best game room in Disney. The whole family enjoys playing games for tickets and then cashing them in for prizes. Afterwards, we head to Chef Mickey's for a nice dinner or to the cafeteria next to the game room for a quick bite. We always finish the trip with a stroll through the stores and admire the inside of the hotel. My family has enjoyed our "trip to the Contemporary" so much that we now give the children Disney Dollars at Christmas time that are specifically for the game room. According to my family, the second runner up is the Pop Century's game room. - Cheryl Fer 1180 |
.) On the last day of our WDW trip, I found I had overbudgeted on some things and had money to spare. Instead of taking the money home, I took the excess money along with all of the change I had accumulated throughout the trip and traded it in for Disney Dollars. That way I didn't spend the money on other things, and I had a head start on saving for next year's trip. Throughout the year, I also throw all of my change and one-dollar bills into a pickle jar and use the money to pay for gas, food, souvenirs, etc. Literally, every penny counts! I've also started saving money in a Christmas Club account through my bank so I have no access to the money and won't be tempted to spend it. - Dayshel Harwood 1084 |
.) We are lucky enough to visit WDW every other year with my parents who are Disney Vacation Club members. After our last trip in 2003 my son started losing his teeth. It was then that I found out how smart that Tooth Fairy is! Knowing we would be returning to WDW in 2005, she started bringing my son Disney Dollars every time he lost a tooth. He gets so excited when he loses a tooth and he knows that the money will be his to spend any way he wants once we are in Disney! - Bestba88 848 |
.) Just a little more information regarding obtaining Disney Dollars by fax: I faxed an order last Wednesday for $100 in $5 denominations to be charged to my credit card and I promptly received a call from Joe at Disney Ticketing who informed me that $50 is the maximum amount that can be charged to your credit card. It seems that anything over $50 has to be processed as a cash advance on your credit card -- yikes! We remedied the situation by charging $50 on the credit card and $50 on my debit card. I received the Dollars via Fed Ex the following Monday morning with a $3 shipping and handling fee, but no processing fee. - Pam Marczuk 844 |
.) We are going to Disney World this May. I wanted to give our two boys Disney Dollars for their Easter basket. Since we do not have a Disney Store very close by, I wanted to find out if I could order them -- but knowing I was under a time constraint (less than two weeks) I was worried they would not arrive in time. I was told that I could order via fax. I faxed in my order first thing Monday morning, and what do you know? The very next morning, there was the Fed Ex guy with my Disney Dollars! The best part was that the shipping was free! You can fax your order complete with the denominations ($1's, $5's, or $10's), name, address, and credit card information, to 1-407-566-5645. Thanks, Disney, for the first class service... AGAIN! - Ramona 835 |
.) If you are renting a stroller and you need it for more than a day, you can do a multi-day rental. I stood in a line our first day to rent a double stroller for $15. On the second day, after standing in another line, I asked for a multi-day rental (three days, to be exact). I was given tickets for all three days at a discounted price! Each day, instead of waiting in line for a new stroller I just showed the attendant my stub and off we went, bypassing the line! At the end of the three days, I turned in my stubs for $3 Disney Dollars. It was great! It really saved us lots of time, hassle and money! Thanks for the great website! - Mary EDITOR'S NOTE: I saw the multi-day rental lines in action this past weekend and they really are great time-savers. In addition, the discount on multi-day rentals is 10 percent per day -- every little bit helps! 780 |
.) I want to share something that worked for my family. My little girl is 4-1/2 years old and each time she would clean her room or help out in any way, she would earn Disney Dollars. She could even trade in real dollars that people gave her for her birthday for Disney Dollars. When we got to Walt Disney World, not only could we get her something we wanted her to have, but she could get some of her favorites "with her own money." This works great! - Shonda Hill 765 |
.) Last year, the day before we were leaving for Disney World, I remembered my daughter had received some Disney Dollars over the years that were never used. I put them in a separate envelope for her and stuck them in my purse. When I pulled them out at WDW, she was so excited to be able to spend her own money. It seemed to make her feel so grown up and she actually took the time to decide what souvenirs she REALLY wanted, rather than asking me to buy her everything she saw. It worked out so well that as soon as we planned our vacation for next year, I began telling family members that if they did not know what to get her for a holiday or her birthday to get her Disney Dollars. This way she has her own money to spend on any "extras" and only buys what she really wants. - Marissapg5 766 |
.) You can order Mickey Dollars (Disney Dollars) through the mail, too. We always do it this way. Just send them the amount you want plus shipping and they will get them right out to you. It's easy and they are a very reliable way of getting Disney Dollars if you don't have a store near you. Here's the address: Disney Ticketing Services |
.) I've found a great way to save for our trip. Every time I go to our local mall, we stop by the Disney Store. I purchase Disney Dollars, as many as I can afford that day. The main reason I do this is I know if I had the cash around the house, it would be spent on something else. This way, it can only be used at Disney World. On our last trip, I didn't tell my husband I had done this. Right before our trip, I showed him my stash. On each envelope the dollars came in, I had written the name of the restaurant, the time for priority seating and the confirmation number. The envelope contained the exact amount of money for that meal, including tax and tips if it was something like a character breakfast or dinner show. When we got to the restaurant, I just pulled out the envelope and everything was taken care of. With other meals, I just guessed what the meal would cost and marked that envelope Other Dinners. I had one envelope which had $200 worth of Disney Dollars for breakfasts for the eight days, one just for gifts to bring home and one for Tara's spending money. By having her own envelope, she knew she could buy whatever was in that envelope and when it was empty, that was it. By saving little by little over a period of time, we didn't have to charge anything. Alex was thrilled with the idea of no credit card bills and we've already begun saving for our next trip. Each time Tara gets cash or a check for her birthday, Christmas, etc., we go right to the mall. This is the best gift anyone could give her. I've told two friends who've begun to do the same. Hope it works for you! - Tara Gergar 625 |
.) Not being a mom myself but a very dedicated aunt, I have given each niece and nephew a set amount of money to use as their own spending money on our big family trips, usually in Disney dollars. This is for them to spend on the things they want that their parents say no to. This time, though, I thought it would be fun for me if they all had to "work" for their money. I made up a game for them where they each have to call me every Sunday. If they call up and say "I love you" and "Mickey Mouse," they get $1.00 in their fund. However, if they are creative and make up a story incorporating those two lines, they get $1.50. This is fun for them and fun for me. And I feel like they are "earning" their spending money. - Sue Kohlert 592 |
.) I have 5 children, so going to Disney is a BIG expense for me. One thing I do to cut my expenses is have the children receive Disney Dollars for the WHOLE year before our trip. I tell all friends and family members to give them to my children for their birthdays. Also, the tooth fairy, Easter bunny and Santa has even been known to give Disney Dollars :) This way, by the time they have received them for the whole year, they have a hefty stash, and Mom and Dad do not have to budget in spending money for them!! - Karen Revis 596 |
.) We've made "sticker charts" for our three children (ages 11, 8, and 5), and for each chore they do, they earn a sticker. Each sticker is worth a dime and once their charts are full, Mom will count the stickers and trade them in for Disney Dollars. We've posted the charts in the kitchen and they've made it into a competition to see who can earn the most stickers. So now instead of fighting over who HAS to walk the dog, they fight over who GETS to walk the dog and earn a sticker! - Bill and Tina Crane 145 |
.) We have a 3-1/2 year-old daughter who is at that toddler stage of learning how to do things for herself. We thought for every time she helps us out by cleaning her room, helping me make her bed, putting on her clothes, (fill your own chore in ), we would give her spare change. She gets to put it in her specially marked coffee can, then when a bit of that change accumulates, we make a trip to our local Disney Store and redeem it for Disney Dollars. She is a lot more helpful around the house now! - Stacey Hoover 146 |
.) We have our "Mickey Money Jug" like everyone else for saving change to convert to Disney Dollars. I've found that it has another use, too. About two months before we leave for our Disney trips, I start throwing in all the one dollar bills I get. This way, we have plenty of singles for the tips without having to worry about them at the last minute! Even though seeing all those dollars may be tempting, I've instituted a penalty for taking anything out of the jug -- pay double back (take a $1, pay back $2, take 2 quarters, pay a dollar, etc.)! We always come out ahead! - DznyLvrs 260 |
.) To involve my children in the moneysaving, we did two things. We posted a chart on the fridge and every week their earned allowance is tallied. The money is paid out in Disney Dollars for the trip and will be their spending money. We also decorated a coffee can with Disney stickers and ALL loose change from every family member gets dropped in. We figure come time for the trip it will pay for several meals! - Sue Maclaughlin 55 |
