newDisney's California Grill will be closing for an extensive renovation beginning January 6, 2013. The restaurant is slated to reopen late summer and will be sporting a new look. Chef Brian Piasecki is very excited -- with the "enhancements to the interactive kitchen we'll be able to give a fresh spin to California Grill classics, and add some cutting-edge new selections to the menu." newThe new Be Our Guest Restaurant in Beast's Castle in the Magic Kingdom's new Fantasyland will start taking reservations in late August, with the restaurant set to open for the holidays. Be Our Guest, inspired by the animated classic “Beauty and the Beast,” has three dining rooms and seats more than 500 guests. Lunch will be quick service, with guest-activated terminals. (There also will be traditional cashiers for cash orders and special dietary requests.) Lunch is delivered to your table on china. Lunch offerings include salads and sandwiches, with a Beauty and the Beast-inspired twist: Tuna Nicoise salad; Croque Monsieur sandwich with carved ham, Gruyere cheese, bechamel and pommes frites (French fries); carved turkey on a warm baguette with Dijon mayonnaise; grilled steak sandwich with garlic butter spread, both with pommes frites; braised pork; for vegetarians, a loaded vegetable quiche or quinoa, shallot and chive salad. Dinner is table service, with starters such as a charcuterie plate with cured meats and sausages, mussels steamed in white wine, French onion or potato leek soup, and a salad with champagne vinaigrette. Entrees include a thyme-scented pork rack chop with au gratin pasta, rotisserie rock hen with roasted fingerling potatoes, pan-seared salmon in leek fondue, grilled strip steak with pommes frites, sauteed shrimp and scallops with veggies in puff pastry with creamy lobster sauce, and an oven-baked ratatouille. In addition, extra hours have been added at Tortuga Tavern and Tomorrowland Terrace.

In honor of the July 4th holiday, various locations at Disney's Hollywood Studios are serving a specialty cupcake with apple pie filling, caramel buttercream, and apple crisp topping. Use your snack credit or purchase for $4.99.

-- Todd English's bluezoo in the Walt Disney World Dolphin recently changed their menu. Look for the menu items to highlight the local farms from which they receive their food.

-- Tables in Wonderland announces Food and Wine Sneak Preview Event for July 28! The “Taste Your Way Around the World” Sneak Preview of the 2012 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival allows guests to sample new dishes and learn more about the upcoming festival events! Taking place at the Odyssey Pavilion in Epcot, the event costs $110.00 per person, plus tax. Gratuity is included. At this time the event is full but a wait list is being taken.

-- Candlelight Processional Lunch and Dinner packages, which include a meal, reserved seating at the Candlelight Processional show and pre-arranged fireworks viewing, went on sale June 26, 2012. (Packages are not available on December 2, at 5 p.m. -- Community Relations Showing.) Package prices do not include tax and gratuity or park admission. Party for the Senses grand tasting events will take place October 6, 13, 20, 27 and November 3. Additional programs, also requiring separate admission, feature a lineup of renowned winemakers, guest chefs and speakers participating in elegant dinners, luncheons, seminars and wine schools. -- Flying Fish Cafe at Disney's Boardwalk Resort has announced its wine dinners for the summer and fall. -- Fresh cut fruit, fruit bowls, noodle salads, and more vegetarian options are now available at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The Bradley Falls kiosk has changed its menu and is now serving edamame beans, Asian noodle salad, lychee salad, and summer rolls.

-- New treats at the Main Street Confectionery include Mickey Ear Hat Brownies ($3.95), chocolate covered pineapple spear, and pre-packaged Mad Treats (confetti popcorn, sour balls, bright bears, sour smiles, glittery heart lollipops, Cheshire Cat lollipops, and Krispie bites).

-- A Tipsy Ducks in Love drink is now being served in Epcot's China pavilion at the Joy of Tea. This beverage is created with iced coffee, tea, whipped cream, plus a generous pour of Jim Beam, and chocolate for $8.50. The non-alcoholic version is $5.50.

-- So Tasty! Vinylmation series are now on sale at retail Disney stores and Disneystore.com for $11.95 each. These cute, scented vinyls include a mint chip ice cream cone, frozen lemonade, buttered popcorn, grape soda, root beer, and bacon cheeseburger.

-- D23 has announced a Sip & Scream event for October 2 and 3, 2012. On October 2, guests can dress up like their favorite Disney movie star or character for a nighttime costume party in Disney's Hollywood Studios. You'll tour the Creative Costuming building prior to dinner inside The Great Movie Ride where you'll wine and dine your way through the elaborate sets, stopping for drinks in the gangster's den, dinner in the old west, and nosh on dessert "over the rainbow."

Begin October 3 at 10 a.m. with coffee and tea inside World ShowPlace for presentations highlighting the Food & Wine Festival and how Disney celebrates Halloween. Then sample new dishes being served during the festival, paired with exquisite wines. Beginning at 1 p.m., guests can explore Epcot -- the hospitality suite inside The American Adventure pavilion will be open for Sip & Scream guests. At 7 p.m. reserved seating is provided for Sugar Ray in concert. Finally enjoy a private dessert party for IllumiNations. Tickets available June 27 at 10 a.m. PST. $125 one-day experience; $320 for the "Super Scream" package; Theme park admission is required for October 3 and is not included with the price of admission.

-- Bradley Falls kiosk at Disney's Animal Kingdom is no longer serving shrimp and pork egg rolls, vegetable egg rolls or chilled summer rolls as of June 13. The following items are available: Edamame beans, Asian noodle salad, Lychee salad, and Summer rolls.


-- Earlier this year, new show times for Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue were tested. Based on that trial run, the show times for the Revue will change to 4 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. effective October 1, 2012. The reservation window for the adjusted show times opens on June 12; all reservations for October 1, 2012, and after will have the updated show times. The category pricing structure will remain the same, and guests using the Disney Dining Plan can still redeem two table-service meals for either Category 2 or Category 3 seats for the 4 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. shows or Categories 1, 2, and 3 seats for the 8:30 p.m. show.

-- There will be TWO special Mickey's Backyard BBQs on July 4 with extra characters. Times are 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Price is $54.99 for adults; $31.99 for children 3-9. Dining Plans can be used for this event (two dinner entitlements per guest). Call 407-WDW-DINE to make reservations.

-- Victoria & Albert's in the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa has received its 13th AAA Five Diamond Award. Of the 28,000 restaurants reviewed in the "AAA North American Tourbook," only 53 have been awarded five diamonds, and only 21 have had that distinction for 13 or more consecutive years.

--Copper River Salmon, the largest and most sought after of all Pacific salmon species, is now available for a limited time at Artist Point restaurant at Wilderness Lodge.

-- Typhoon Lagoon is testing a new food tent/menu with Jerk Chicken Wraps and Meatball Subs.


-- Celebrate the summer solstice on June 20 at Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant at Downtown Disney at Chef Kevin Dundon's first signature Midsummer Feast. Tutto Italia in Epcot's Italy pavilion reopened today, May 1, after a refurbishment with new menus for lunch, dinner, dessert, gluten-free dining, and kids, as well as a new wine cellar, Tutto Gusto. Located in a reproduction of the Medici Palace, the new wine cellar features 200 Italian wines and a selection of authentic Italian small plates.

-- Starbucks drinks and food items are coming to all of the theme parks at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. In June, the first of six planned Starbucks locations is scheduled to open at Disney California Adventure (see Disneyland News below). More locations are planned at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom).

-- The 20th Annual Chef's Gala benefiting Heart of Florida United Way will be held Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Epcot's World Showplace. One of the region's premier food and wine pairing charity events, Chef's Gala features cuisine from more than 20 of Central Florida's top chefs, including those from such Walt Disney World restaurants as Artist Point, California Grill, Cítricos, Flying Fish Cafe, Jiko, Raglan Road Irish Pub and Todd English's bluezoo. The event also includes "thoughtfully paired wines," a sparkling wine and martini bar reception, desserts, live music and a silent auction. Proceeds from Chef's Gala support United Way funded programs that provide shelter, food and other basic necessities to Central Floridians in need. Individual ticket: $225; $400 per couple. -- According to sources at the California Grill at the Contemporary Resort, the signature restaurant is scheduled to close for an extended period soon while important maintenance is done. Glass windows will be replaced, and repair work will be done on the roof. In addition, the kitchen and other back room areas will be renovated. When the restaurant reopens, it will continue to operate as the California Grill and will serve the same type of menu. Exact dates for this work have not been confirmed as yet.

-- Due to new crowd patterns caused by the recent closure of Test Track, all three Land attractions and the Grab 'n Go section of Sunshine Seasons will be open until 10 p.m. on a trial basis .

-- Epcot's Cool Wash Pizza has been removed from its location near Test Track. No information on whether this is a permanent closure or temporary change while Test Track is closed.

-- There's an amazing new cocktail menu at La Luce in the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek Resort. In the mix are the Umami: A cocktail including tomato-infused Plymouth Gin, Campari, Honey Truffle Syrup, and a Bacon Rim garnish; the Black and Blue with Gosling Black Seal Rum, House-made Blueberry Syrup, Lemon, and Basil; and the Citrus Sparkler made with Prosecco, Grand Marnier, Sugar Cube, Angostura Bitters, and Local Fresh Squeezed Citrus. In addition, order the brand new Polenta cake for dessert.

-- Disney Cruise Line will discontinue high tea at Palo aboard the DCL ships this summer. Effective dates are: July 22 Disney Dream; August 10 Disney Magic; August 13 Disney Wonder and Disney Fantasy.

-- There are some new Disney kitchen accessories finding their way onto shop shelves. At Mombasa Marketplace, bamboo coasters, platters, and utensils embossed with Mickey will add flair to your table. And there's exotic Animal Kingdom tableware that includes plates, bowls, mugs, and more. Keep an eye out for the new Mickey and Minnie kitchenware in classic black and white (teapot, mugs, plates and a handy water bottle) found at resort stores.

-- Recently, we spotted two new cupcakes at the Polynesian Resort's Captain Cook's. Both cupcakes -- Chocolate Macadamia and Lemon Ginger -- were selling for $3.99 or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit. These flavors work well with the resort's South Seas theme.

-- Vinylmation fans finally got a sneak peak of the "So Tasty" series set to be released at Disney Stores on June 6. The scented set will have some of our fave Disney foods represented such as popcorn and ice cream!

Tutto Gusto RenderingTutto Gusto, a new wine bar adjacent to Tutto Italia Ristorante in the Italy Pavilion at Epcot, is set to open in early May. It takes over the former lobby space of Tutto Italia and extends back toward the pizzeria, Via Napoli. With just 96 seats, Tutto Gusto will be an intimate space patterned after an Italian wine cellar, and will feature stone walls and floors, vaulted ceilings and a fireplace in the dining room. The small-plate menu has six sections: Affettati (cured, sliced meats); Formaggi (Italian cheeses); Panini (sandwiches); Piccoli Piatti (small plates); Cavatappi (a type of pasta), and Dolci (sweets). Menu items include such Italian favorites as prosciutto de Parma, creamy burrata cheese and mussels with white wine. The three pasta dishes are made with cavatappi, a corkscrew-shaped pasta: tomato and bufala mozzarella; shrimp, chilis, garlic and tomato; and arugula, potato, pancetta, tomatoes and asiago cheese. There will be more than 200 Italian wines, including sparkling, reds and whites, and beers such as La Rossa, Moretti and Menabrea. Grappa will also be available, as will espresso and cappuccino. Tutto Gusto will be open 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and will accept the Disney Dining Plan.

-- More details on the Epcot France Bakery Expansion: Jerome Bocuse, head of the company that runs the dining establishments in Epcot's France Pavilion, mentioned the upcoming French Bakery Expansion in a recent interview. According to the interview, the expanded counter service restaurant will resemble modern French bakeries and feature sandwiches made with freshly made (in house) bread. The article mentions a March 2013 opening date for the expanded bakery.

-- Scrumptious Easter delights are appearing all over the parks. And what better time to indulge in candy, cookies, and other treats? Recently spotted were pastel-decorated sweets with fun themes -- Bunnies, Spring Flowers, and Easter Eggs.

The Hollywood Brown Derby at Disney's Hollywood Studios is testing an interactive menu for guests dining with special diets as an enhancement to the dining experience. Basically, this is a themed iPad that guests use to indicate allergies and special diet preferences. If successful, the interactive menu experience will be rolled out to many restaurants throughout Walt Disney World property. But don't worry; chefs will still visit the table to speak with guests who need more in-depth menu alterations.

-- The James Beard Foundation has announced semi-finalists for the 2012 Restaurant and Chef Awards, including Disney World and Orlando-area Chefs. Scott Hunnel of Victoria & Albert's at the Grand Floridian and Tony Mantuano of Downtown Disney's Portobello Restaurant (consulting chef) are both up for Best Chef – South. The Lifetime Achievement Award will go to Wolfgang Puck at the May Awards Reception.

-- The Landscape of Flavors at Disney's Art of Animation Resort (opening May 31, 2012) will feature five mini shops serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tables in Wonderland is hosting another "Discovery Dinner" at The Wave... of American Flavors at Disney's Contemporary Resort on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. The evening will celebrate Central Florida's strawberry season and will feature produce by Lott Farms, located just west of Plant City, Florida. -- A new Publix supermarket has opened close to the Magic Kingdom area at Lakeside Village Center, 7880 Winter Garden Vineland Road in Windermere. The new store also has a pharmacy.

-- Specialty bakery babycakesNYC is now offering Walt Disney World Resort guests the chance to order two-layer, 6" cakes (serves 8-10 people) to go along with their dining reservations. Call the bakery directly (407-938-9044) at least one week in advance to place the order. The cake will then be served to you toward the end of your meal. When you place your order, be sure to have your dining reservation confirmation number, date, and time handy. The bakery, located in the Downtown Disney Marketplace is open 9:30 a.m. until 11 p.m. daily.
