Mural in the Contemporary
Hi everyone! I'm at Walt Disney World right now, enjoying my annual Mother's Day weekend. I'm taking this week off, so you'll notice that this week's column is a repeat of the May 4, 2009 column. I'll be back on May 18 with a brand new column -- see you then!
Jenny writes: Hi Anita; love your column! Can you tell me the story behind the Grand Concourse mural in the Contemporary Resort? We have been going to Disney annually for the last five years, and every year I have failed to understand the connection between stylized Native American children, goats and a "contemporary" theme. I thought if anyone could, Anita Answer would be the one to shed some light on this phenomenon. Looking forward (and hoping) to hear one of your stories. Hi Jenny! Believe it or not, there's a very simple explanation for the mural's subject matter: the area where it's located used to be called the Grand Canyon Concourse. Disney legend and artist Mary Blair designed the 90 foot tall mural, which consists of nearly 18,000 hand-painted tiles, and is said to be the largest mural in the world. At one time, the "Grand Canyon" theme was found throughout the Contemporary, but the mural is about all that is left of it these days. That's all there is to it -- I wish it was a more exciting story! Trivia: What very odd animal is pictured in the mural? Answer in the May 18 column, because I'll be at the World next week. Marcia writes: Are there showers available to use after checking out of the room at Old Key West? We have a late evening flight but would like to spend the afternoon at the pool. Thanks! Hi Marcia! The changing/restrooms by the main pool at Old Key West's Hospitality House do have showers for guests to use, so you'll be able to clean up before your flight home. Have a wonderful vacation at the World! A.A.
Don writes: We just got back from Spring Break at Disneyland. One afternoon when we rode Pirates, I noticed a light flashing in the middle window of the "house" above the Blue Bayou. Later that evening when we ate there the light was still flashing in the same pattern. Two days later, when we rode Pirates again, the light was not flashing at all. Is there some significance to this flashing like the telegraph message in the New Orleans Square train station? Could it be just a bit of coincidence and Disney Magic or just a bad light bulb (my wife's opinion)? Hi Don! I consulted with my dear friends Mickey and Donald, who both used to work at Disneyland's Blue Bayou restaurant. Neither of them can recall ever seeing anything like you describe or hearing any stories about it. I'm going to have to go with your wife on this one and call it a bad bulb, I think! Sorry! A.A.
Annie writes: Hi Anita! Thanks for all of your great info and little-known Disney facts! I always look forward to a new addition. I've been listening to the WDW Soundtrack to tie myself over between trips to the World and started wondering about the effects in the attraction "Its Tough to Be a Bug." What really happens when the wasps "sting" you? I'd assume that it was just air being blown from the chair, but it really feels like something pokes you. Do you know? Thanks for your help! Hi Annie! Yes, I do know, and I'll tell you right after the Spoiler Space below. For those who wish to be surprised when experiencing the attraction for the first time, please skip to the next question and answer. SPOILER SPACE Annie, the next time you go to It's Tough to Be a Bug, before you sit down, look at the bottom of the seat back. There you'll find a small hole. A blunt piece of plastic comes out of the hole at the time of the "sting" and pokes you in the lower back, then it retracts into the hole again. Mystery solved! A.A.
Last Week's Trivia Question: What was the original name of the shop where Pirates League will soon be located? Answer: The House of Treasure, which closed in 2001, is the location for the new Pirates League. Apparently I either stumped you with that question or else I may have bored you with it, as I only received a handful of correct answers this week!
