So you’re not a thrill-ride enthusiast? That’s OK — Walt Disney World is the perfect place to change that! While there are truly some high-octane thrills, (like Expedition Everest or Rock n’ Roller Coaster) there are also plenty of “mild but wild” rides.
Here are our picks for rides with just the right amount of thrill for first-time thrill seekers or self-proclaimed thrill-ride wimps.
Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to Magic Kingdom‘s newest coaster we go! Part of New Fantasyland, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a brand-new ride system, where the cars actually swing sideways, as you go up and down the track — just like a mine car! This is a great ride for the less adventurous among us because there aren’t any big drops — but there is an incredible trip through the Dwarfs mine!
Head over to Animal Kingdom where you can board a raft and float down the Chakranadi River where illegal logging is jeopardizing the jungle! While you will absolutely get wet, there is no big Splash-mountain size drop on Kali. You’ll experience some slight tossing and turning in the raft, but the most thrilling part of this attraction is the story!
The gentlest of the rides on our list can be found at Epcot, in the Land Pavilion. This is truly one of the most loved attractions at Walt Disney World. While you will be physically lifted into the air, this is really not a “thrill” ride. It’s a beautiful adventure across the globe, where you’ll be fully immersed into the scenery. You’ll enjoy flying over the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall of China, and the Sydney Harbor so much, you’ll forget all about your fears!
Jump into Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and climb aboard a coaster built by Andy himself! Slinky Dog Dash was constructed out of his Dash & Dodge Mega Coaster Play Kit, blocks, and strings lights. This ride DOES have a couple quick take-offs, but there aren’t any major drops or turns. Slinky Dog Dash is an incredibly fun ride, and we highly recommend it for everyone – even if you’re not “into” thrills.
Step right up to see the one, the only, The Great Goofini! The Barnstormer reopened in 2012 with the circus theme featuring daredevil pilot, Goofy. This coaster is short (1.5 minutes) so it’ll be over before you even have time to wimp out. It’s a Magic Kingdom first-coaster rite of passage and it’s perfect for big and little ones alike!

Some people just have motion issues. How I wish I could do these rides. Have tried all except Slinky. Will try that soon

I’m trying to figure out the best “first coasters” for my niece and nephew. Did you find Slinky tamer than Big Thunder Mountain Railroad? I noticed it wasn’t on your tame list.
I think they are pretty equal, but Slinky might be slightly tamer. Big Thunder doesn’t have any big drops but there are quite a few fast turns. Slinky starts faster than Thunder, but there aren’t big drops and I believe it’s a shorter experience. I suggest starting with barnstormer and gauge their excitement. I know kids who love both Slinky and Thunder!
Real whimps might want to start off on the rides out front of the grocery store first. Bring your mommy and a bag of quarters.
