Tower of Terror Glows at Night

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

You can take something that is slightly unsettling and make it even moreso just by changing the angle and waiting for the right moment. Disney’s Hollywood Studios plays home to Tower of Terror, an elevator ride you will never forget and I will never attempt again. Anyhoo, there’s a creepy glowing sign outside on your left before you visit the gift shop.

Normally I only write blogs about using point and shoot cameras but in this case, I used my Canon EOS 30D and Canon 28-135mm IS USM lens. That’s a D-SLR and lens with image stabilization.

These photos were all taken with the settings of ISO 500, f3.5, 1/20 and handheld. I braced myself and rested my elbows on the ledge in front of the sign and held my breath when depressing the shutter button.

Here you can see the text that shows during the day and the night version as it starts to fill in.

The same straight-on shot with the neon filled in. The sign has a whole new…life…at night.

Take a gander at how the mood intensifies with a change of composition.

By getting closer to the sign and having the bottom of the “R” touch the edge of the frame it feels like it’s either reaching out or trying to pull you in.

If you’re not one to ride, now you’ve got a new photo to try while waiting for your friends and family.
