Fit at Fifty!

Focus on Disney World by Barrie Brewer

tae.jpgAs some of you may already know, on January 9, I will be running in the Walt Disney World Half Marathon as a member of Team AllEars. It is my first half marathon and I am very excited. Some friends and I were talking about how the people on Biggest Loser had run a half marathon. We said, “If they can do it, then certainly we can”, and before we had time to think about it we signed up. Silly girls.

That was in March and I had spent a nice cozy winter on my couch. I knew that if I wanted to be able to finish I was going to have to start my training right away. You see, I am no athlete, not by a long shot. I started out by walking, slowly, every day. I soon realized that if I was going to be able to finish without getting swept, I was going to have to run at least some of the race. Now, you have to understand, the word run has never been part of my vocabulary, even as a child. But I was determined to finish. You see, as soon as I signed up, I told everyone I know that I was doing it. I call that insurance.

On May 4, I started my running program. I found a terrific plan, called the Couch to 5K Running Plan. On the first day it said to run 60 seconds, then walk 90 seconds and repeat that for 20 minutes. I thought to myself, “How hard can that be?” Again, silly girl.

I won’t bore you with the play by play, but here it is mid-November and now I actually call myself a runner! I’m up to 9 miles and I’m confident about completing the half marathon. I’ll be turning fifty years old in June and I figure that’s a milestone that should be celebrated all year long. I’m going to kick off my celebration at Disney World in January.

As part of my commitment to Team AllEars, I am raising money to donate to Deb’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. I have published a calendar and a book, both of which feature some of my favorite photos from Walt Disney World. I am selling each of them and from now until Marathon Weekend, I’ll be donating the proceeds to help fight breast cancer. I know they weren’t listed on Scott’s Gift Giving Guide, but I think they’ll make wonderful holiday presents!

Click on the photos below to go to the pages where you can preview and order each one. Both sites will allow you to see what all the pages look like – just look for the preview buttons. Thanks for taking a look and I hope you like them enough to buy dozens for all your friends and family!

Edited to add: I just found a couple of coupon codes good on the calendar. Save 25% with HOLIDAYS or get 2nd calendar at half price with HALF. Just enter coupon codes in at checkout. I’m not sure how long they are good for. Using the discount codes won’t decrease the donation amount, it’ll just save you money.

  1. I have always admired your pictures in your blog and think that this is a wonderful way to share them! I love the fact that both websites ship to European countries for a very reasonable shipping fee! It makes them very easy to buy for us European Disney fans! I am looking forward to having the calendar in my office in 2010.

Barrie’s reply: Thank you Magdalene (such a beautiful name!). That’s great about the shipping. I hope you receive it quickly.
